I trained to be a sports journalist with the rigor of an athlete. Positive reinforcement comes while I’m a cub reporter: the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation awards me 1989’s (national) Michele Clark Fellowship, which the organization bestows on a journalist to watch.
To bolster my journalism acumen with irrefutable authority, I become a licensed boxing judge, boxing coach, basketball referee, and NASCAR specialist. The certifications enhance the information base I kicked off with my father before turning 10.
And, voilà, during 21 years as a TV sports and news reporter, I take credibility, tact, and polish into interviews with Mrs. Rosa Parks, other high-profile newsmakers, and major athletes.
I change course and careers because I have to.
And, because I have to battle for my own fair treatment, I become a subject-matter expert on U.S. civil rights.
I survive the economic lynching of my beloved journalism career — and I pivot. Successfully.
